(PHOTOS 3 & 4)
there's also the name of the LIDO as well as the written words of "XX Anniversaire" and the years 1946 and 1966. All the lettering is embossed.
On the
bottom of the medallion (on the back) is the French word "Argent," indicating the color as silver or white.
The honorary medallion is made with an unknown silver metal with a bit of weight to it.
One jeweler said it's not REALLY silver, but was unable to identify the contents.
There are signs of age, with a few nicks and scrapes. But otherwise, the previously-owned medallion is in good shape. It's a bit faded and obviously USED, but its a cultural relic from Paris and one of the most famous landmarks in history. The LIDO medallion will be protected in cardboard and bubble-wrap.
It will be shipped via USPS First Class Mail.
THE HISTORY OF THE LIDO
Founded in 1946 by Joseph and Louis Clerico, the Le Lido began as an artificial beach in a townhouse basement in the 1920s. In the late-night hours, it was known as a night-club and casino.Originally located on the Champs Elysee in Paris, it was named after the famous Italian beach near Venice, a favorite of Parisians. In the period between the two World Wars, the club offered swimming facilities In 1955, the owners teamed with Producer Don Arden, and brought the Lido to the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas. The shows played at the Tropicana (Folies Bergere) and the Dunes (Casino de Paris) but the Stardust edition closed in 1992. After starting as a cabaret and burlesque show, many famous names appeared there. They included: Edith Piaf, Siegfried and Roy, Maurice Chevalier, Marlene Dietrich, Eartha Kitt, Josephine Baker, Laurel & Hardy, Shirley MacLaine, Mitzi Gaynor, Juliet Prowse, Noel Coward and Elton John. Together with the Moulin Rouge, the Lido was symbolic of the crazy and wild Parisian nightlife and still attracts fans to this day.
