Following the popular 1999 - 2008 Statehood quarter program and one-year 2009 D. C. and U. S. Territories quarter program, the United States Mint is issuing commemorative quarters with special reverse designs celebrating national parks and other national sites. From 2010 - 2021, a park or site is being honored in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U. S. Territories - Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U. S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands. Each national park or site was selected for its natural or historical significance.
The 56 different state, district and territory designs are featured on the reverse side of the quarter and are representative of the unique character and environment of the national park or historic site. The obverse side of the quarter features a smaller restoration of the original Washington quarter portrait, modeled from a designer John Flanagan's 1932 plaster.
Like the Statehood quarters program, the America the Beautiful commemorative quarters are being minted and issued at the rate of five new designs per year, in approximately ten-week intervals. The coins are being released in the order that the locations were first designated as national sites. Once the scheduled ten-week period of production is over for each issue, no more quarters of that design will be minted for circulation.
Coins struct for general circulation bear a Philadelphia "P" mint mark or a Denver "D" mint mark signifying where the coins were produced. In 2012 the San Francisco Mint began, once again, to mint coins for circulation. They are beginning with the America the Beautiful quarters, and bears the "S" mint mark.
What is a
Brilliant Uncirculated
and
Uncirculated
Coin?
This simply means a coin has never been used, that is to say has never been placed into the channels of commerce and therefore has received no wear. The Mint is a manufacturing plant, like any other factory and endeavors to make as many coins of acceptable quality as quickly as they can. A coin that is uncirculated can have marks, mint scratches, tarnish stains, etc. A
Brilliant Uncirculated
coin has minimal marks, mint scratches, tarnish stains, etc and is handled by collectors with soft gloves to prevent any additional unnecessary marking of the coic. An
Uncirculated
coin has to be unused, but not necessarily attractive. Uncirculated Quarters are taken from Original Mint Rolls and Bags.
