UTA - UNION DES TRANSPORTS AÉRIENSPARIS, FRANCE
C.1960
ARTIST:
JEAN COLIN (1881 - 1961)
Description:
Union de Transports Aériens (UTA) was the largest wholly privately owned and independent airline in France.
UTA was formed in 1963 as a result of a merger between Union Aéromaritime de Transport (UAT) and Transports Aériens Intercontinentaux (TAI). The airline was a subsidiary of Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Réunis, the French shipping line founded and controlled by the Fabre family.
Interesting, whimsical illustration by the renowned poster artist Jean Colin; Depicted here a painting easel shaped like the Eiffel Tower and a hand drawing the word "Paris" using a lipstick (!). On top of the letter "i" the famous windmill of the cabaret "Moulin Rouge". Above it all the McDonnell Douglas DC-8 "Comet" aircraft.
Margin Text:
"JEP & CARRÉ _ PARIS"
ARTIST:
Jean Colin (1881-1961)
Born in 1881 in Brussels, Belgium, Colin studied painting and engraving at the Académie de Bruxelles under Isidore Verheyden. He won the coveted "Prix de Rome" in 12910. Colin lived and perfected his artistic style in Italy and Algeria before returning to Belgium where he worked as a painter in an impressionistic style and executed a series of posters for AIR FRANCE. He also tutored Bernard Villemot who became one of the great poster designers in his own right. Colin passed on 1961 in Saint Josse ten Node. His work is highly collectible.
